- What do you need to cover? What are you most concerned with when it comes to pet expenses? Are your annual checkups running close to $1,000 a year after medications, vaccinations and exam fees? If so, a maintenance plan that offers coverage for preventative services may be best for you. If your annual expenses are light and accidents are your primary concern, a bare-bones policy will likely get you by.
- Can you go to your current vet? If you're already used to going to a specific vet, make sure your policy will reimburse any vet (or that yours is considered in network). The last thing you want is to have to run across town to the vet after your dog swallows a bag of socks.
- Does your dog have a preexisting condition? Many policies will deny coverage for a dog with a preexisting condition. If your dog has a serious illness, seek out a policy that will cover an event after a dog has been deemed "cured" of the disease, or that will offer a terminal dog accident only coverage.
