Embrace Pet Insurance offers an array of products that should meet the needs of many pet owners. The online experience is clean and user-friendly. Policyholder reviews of the service are generally positive, however, users have reported higher pricing than some competing products. The ability to insure an older pet, secure coverage for an at-risk purebred pet, or insure a pet with a pre-existing condition that has been cured and not shown symptoms for at least 12 months  may make a higher cost policy worth considering for some pet parents.

Embrace Company Overview

While founded in 2003, Embrace’s first insurance policy was sold until October of 2006. That still gives the company over 15 years of experience providing customers with top-notch pet insurance while giving back to their community.

It’s worth noting that Embrace doesn't underwrite their Pet Insurance policies, rather they administer policies that are underwritten by a handful of partner insurance companies. This is common practice in the era of tech companies offering insurance and shouldn’t scare you away from Embrace’s offerings. It does mean that specific offerings may vary by state, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with any quotes you receive so you understand your policy version and get the coverage that will benefit your pet long term.

Embrace has built a company focused on providing reliable coverage to pet owners across the U.S. while not losing sight of the local communities that have allowed its business model to succeed. Embrace donates $2 of every policy owned to charity and also offers a 5% discount to service members. If you’re looking for an ethical community first organization as you shop for pet insurance, Embrace might be worth considering.

Embrace Pricing and Benefits

Embrace offers robust coverage that you may be hard pressed to find with other pet insurance companies. Coverage starts at as little as $1 a day. This may be more than some competitors, but the extra expense may be justified by some of the other benefits offered by Embrace.

To start, Embrace offers a path to ensure your pet’s pre-existing conditions if the condition is curable and your pet remains symptom free for 12 months. This is an outlier in the pet insurance space where pre-existing conditions are typically excluded outright.

Another additional benefit offered by Embrace is that they do not exclude breed specific genetic diseases from coverage, as long as the disease is not pre-existing. This may cause some to breathe a sigh of relief, but remember that your pet breed will factor into your premium for pet insurance, so an at-risk pet is likely to result in a higher premium. With that being said, a higher premium is better than not being able to be insured.

Embrace offers a number of benefits one would expect when shopping for pet insurance, but that aren’t always standard.

  • Embrace won’t drop your pet due to the number of claims filed
  • Behavior therapy can be covered if administered by a vet
  • Cancer may be covered if your pet has made it past the waiting period and the cancer was not a pre existing condition

If you’re looking to help cover the ongoing expenses that come with owning a pet that may not fall under traditional insurance, Embrace also offers a program called Wellness Rewards. Wellness Rewards will reimburse a policyholder for pet expenses like nail trimming, flea and tick treatment and dental work. Wellness Rewards is comparable to a human’s health savings account, and may reimburse expenses up to $650 a year depending on the policy. Unfortunately, this can not be purchased as a standalone policy, and you must be an Embrace policyholder to purchase a Wellness Rewards add-on.

Embrace Pet Insurance

Embrace Dog Insurance

Embrace’s dog insurance offering may stand out from the rest of the pack in a few areas. For starters, Embrace offers a vanishing deductible feature. Each year that Embrace doesn’t pay a claim on your account, your deductible is reduced by $50. If your pup is generally healthy but an insurance policy will help you rest easier at night this could be a deciding factor.

In addition to a vanishing deductible, Embrace can also provide coverage for dogs of all ages. While some carriers may opt to decline coverage for dogs over a certain age entirely, Embrace will offer at least an accident-only plan after your dog is over the age of 15.

Embrace Cat Insurance

Similar to dog insurance, Embrace offers a comprehensive range of coverage for cats of all ages, offering accident only policies for cats over 15 years old. The added benefits of a vanishing deductible, coverage for curable pre-existing conditions, and access to the Wellness Rewards add-on can all be found in Embrace’s cat policies.

Embrace Reviews

Embrace User Reviews

The people of the internet have spoken, and Embrace has been able to maintain mostly positive reviews. Facebook, reddit and twitter users all widely report that claims are paid out in a timely manner, and pre-existing conditions are clearly identified when opening an account. The @EmbracePetIns twitter handle seems to address concerns quickly and in a professional manner.

Embrace is accredited by the BBB and has a rating of A+.

Embrace Compliants

The largest compliant group we’ve seen for Embrace is related to pricing. Many users report high monthly prices. We cannot stress the importance of shopping around for quotes before deciding on a final policy, but we cannot put too much faith in user reports of high pricing. Prices are highly volatile based on your pets breed, age and your location.

While Embrace does have an A+ rating with the BBB there are a number of complaints reported on the site. A majority of the complaints are related to claims for pre-existing conditions being declined or policyholders making claims within the waiting period. It’s important to discuss these nuances with the insurance agency before you purchase a policy  if you have any questions. If you’re making an insurance claim, it is likely during a time of stress for you and your best (pet)  friend. Adding to the stress with a declined insurance claim defeats the purpose of purchasing an insurance policy.

Getting a Quote with Embrace Pet Insurance

Getting a quote is fast and can take as little as a few minutes. Embrace will ask you to fill out a quick online form with some information about your pet like age, breed and your zip code. Once the necessary information is provided Embrace will match you to pricing options for your pet. If you have any questions a number is provided to speak to an agent - or you can take the next steps and purchase the policy online.

Final thoughts on Embrace Pet Insurance

Embrace Pet Insurance offers a well rounded product with a consumer friendly online interface. Policyholder reviews of the service are net positive and the company takes an admirable community first approach with their business model. Quotes may come in higher with this company than some others on the market, but the ability to insure an aging pet, at-risk breed or a pet with a curable pre-existing condition may make a higher cost policy worthwhile.
